Behind the Music

It started as small talk with a stranger. He was in Germany, I was here, and we'd never have crossed paths any other way. But conversations between strangers have a way of finding the thing you're both carrying, and within a few messages we'd found ours. We were both watching our mothers disappear.

His mother had cancer. Mine has Alzheimer's and dementia. Those are not the same loss. His was measured in scans and treatment cycles, in a body giving out while the person inside stayed. Mine has no timeline at all, just a slow withdrawal, a mother still sitting across from me who is less there each visit. We couldn't compare notes on symptoms or doctors or what comes next. Almost nothing about our situations lined up.

And yet we understood each other completely.

That's what I wanted the music to hold. Mutterliebe is built as two worlds, two separate voices moving through their own material at their own pace, in their own key of grief. They don't merge, because that would be a lie. What they do is answer each other. One phrase reaches, the other responds from a great distance, and somewhere in that space between them is the thing I still can't say plainly in words: that the love a son carries for his mother is the same love in every language, and that recognizing it in someone else's life is what keeps you standing in your own.

I've never met him. I don't know if I ever will. But he was there, and I was there, and neither of us went through it alone.
